Let's meet Dr Myriam Perschke

We are thrilled to welcome Dr. Myriam Perschke to the REWRITE project as she joins us in August 2024 to support the University of Southern Denmark’s initiatives. Dr. Perschke is eager to contribute to this groundbreaking rewilding project, deepening her understanding of human-nature connections while fostering a more biodiverse and climate-resilient future—a passion that has been the cornerstone of her academic career.

Dr. Perschke's academic journey began with a Bachelor of Biology at Ludwig Maximilian University in Munich, Germany, where she studied the impact of antiepileptic drug residues on small aquatic crustaceans. Her curiosity about marine environments led her to pursue a Master's in Marine Environmental Sciences at Carl von Ossietzky University in Oldenburg, Germany, where she investigated the effects of microplastics on intertidal mussels and lugworms in Hokkaido, Japan. Her PhD at Nelson Mandela University in Gqeberha, South Africa, marked a pivotal shift in her research, moving from examining ecological threats to exploring the benefits within social-ecological systems. Her work focused on mapping human values and integrating coastal ecosystem services into national conservation planning.

Dr. Perschke brings a wealth of expertise in mapping and assessing coastal ecosystem services, which will be instrumental in the REWRITE project as we aim to quantify the benefits of rewilded ecosystems. At the University of Southern Denmark, she gained significant experience in stakeholder engagement through her involvement in the EU project "Blue4All" in the Danish Wadden Sea. This expertise will be invaluable in her role within Work Package 4 of REWRITE, where she will focus on engaging local and international stakeholders.

In addition, Dr. Perschke will work closely with the Demonstrator site Gyldensteen, a remarkable area in North Fyn, Denmark, that has been transformed from agricultural land into a coastal lagoon. She is enthusiastic about collaborating with the exceptional experts on our project team and looks forward to contributing to the restoration of valuable coastal areas through REWRITE.

We look forward to seeing everyone at the General Assembly in October 2024!
