Ecosystem Services: One Planet, One Health

The University of Twente has opened an exciting opportunity for a Postdoctoral Researcher specializing in remote sensing to enhance our understanding of ecosystem functioning in tidal areas. As climate challenges and environmental changes increasingly impact coastal and tidal zones, this role will delve into critical research, aiming to improve sustainable practices and conservation efforts.

On Friday, September 27th, the REWRITE members from the Harokopio University of Athens, had the pleasure of participating in the European Researchers' Night at the National Technical University of Athens

The REWRITE project marked a significant milestone with the successful organization of its first annual meeting, which took place in Ghent from October 8-11, 2024. Held at the beautiful Het Rustpunt Monastery, the venue provided a serene and inspiring backdrop for the meetings, fostering productive discussions and collaboration among the participants.

In order to revitalize the seagrass beds of Ria de Aveiro, the REWRITE project recently conducted six intensive days of seagrass restoration, spread over July and August.

The REWRITE project recently achieved a major milestone with the launch of a Restoration Workshop and Living Lab at the ‘Ria de Aveiro’ demo site, bringing together experts and stakeholders committed to restoring coastal ecosystems. This event was a collaborative effort between REWRITE and other prominent European projects: A-AAGORA, RESTORE4Cs, and LIFE SeagrassRiaWild. Though each project has unique goals, they share a dedication to reviving essential coastal habitats, including primary dunes, seagrass beds, and salt marshes.

This workshop marked the official launch of the Living Lab for coastal restoration—a dynamic environment fostering innovation by engaging local stakeholders in the research process. The Living Lab approach emphasizes a collaborative exchange, allowing stakeholders to directly participate in designing and testing new solutions that reflect their immediate needs and insights.

The Restoration Workshop not only raised awareness about the challenges facing coastal ecosystems but also underscored the importance of co-creation in achieving effective restoration. With input from a diverse range of voices, the Living Lab is set to drive meaningful advancements in the restoration of Ria de Aveiro’s unique ecological landscape.

As part of the International Geographical Congress in Dublin, REWRITE conducted a successful field excursion at the ‘Dublin Bay’ demonstration site.

Dr. Ioli Skouroliakou is a microbial ecologist whose work focuses on the intricate links between biodiversity and ecosystem functions, particularly in the context of environmental change. Within the REWRITE project, she applies her expertise to uncover how microbial communities shape and sustain coastal ecosystems, contributing valuable insights into rewilding efforts across Europe.

Dr. Myriam Perschke joins the REWRITE project, bringing her expertise in coastal ecosystem services and stakeholder engagement to support the restoration of Europe's valuable coastal areas. Her diverse research background and passion for rewilding will drive innovative solutions within our team.
