Meet Benjamin Lee from Nantes University
Join us in giving the warmest welcome to our newest REWRITER, Benjamin Lee!
Benjamin is a remote sensing scientist whose work focuses on mapping seagrass meadows. During his bachelor's in biology, he completed two student research projects: one in seagrass meadows and another in mangrove forests. He then worked at a wetland nature reserve, monitoring selected animal populations with known zoonotic risks. This experience led him to appreciate the importance of spatial science, prompting him to undertake a master’s study in remote sensing. By combining both trainings, he developed a large-scale seagrass mapping approach in Google Earth Engine for his PhD.
Within the REWRITE project, Benjamin is investigating whether remote sensing can be used to predict seagrass aboveground biomass, belowground biomass, and soil carbon in European intertidal seagrass meadows. This builds on an existing ICE CREAMS model, developed by ISOMer to map the European intertidal seagrass distribution and cover, and extends it for carbon stock mapping.
