Bringing mudflats into the spotlight: REWRITE on French national television
What if one of nature's most valuable ecosystems is also one of its most misunderstood?
This question reached millions of viewers as REWRITE was featured on the evening news of the French television channel TF1, one of the country's largest national broadcasters. The report highlighted the remarkable ecological value of intertidal mudflats, ecosystems that are often overlooked despite the many benefits they provide for nature, climate and society.
Representing the project, REWRITE Coordinator Vona Méléder explained how mudflats support biodiversity, capture carbon, sustain fisheries and contribute to healthier, more resilient coastlines. Far from being empty stretches of mud, these dynamic habitats are home to countless species and play an essential role in coastal ecosystem functioning.
The feature also showcased the importance of making scientific research accessible to the wider public. Raising awareness of the ecological functions of mudflats is a key step towards building support for their protection and restoration, which lies at the heart of the REWRITE project.
As climate change and biodiversity loss continue to affect Europe's coasts, communicating the value of these ecosystems beyond the scientific community has never been more important. National media coverage offers a unique opportunity to reach new audiences and inspire greater appreciation for coastal rewilding.
We are grateful to TF1 for helping bring the story of Europe's mudflats to such a broad audience and for highlighting the research carried out within REWRITE.
